Natural Brown Board
Natural Brown Board from Elopak is one of our most recent packaging innovations, driven by the market trend towards more sustainable and differentiating packaging solutions. The absence of clay coating makes the board stand out, giving it a more natural, “eco” look.
However, the exclusion of clay coating also leaves the substrate surface uneven and coarse and leads to high ink absorption. This primarily affects the uniform printing of solid colors and the behavior of the smallest printed dot. Vector graphics are preferred to images, while soft shadows and fade-outs are not recommended.
Show & Tell
The mockup below will guide you through common design elements and help you to better understand Elopak process requirements.
Opaque-white Ink
Opaque-white ink can be used stand-alone or as an underlaying ink layer for images and vector graphics. White ink is only printed at 100% coverage (solid color) and cannot be used in halftones. For food safety reasons, the total white ink printed area must be kept under 40%.
Appearance of color
Colors printed on Natural Brown Board generally appear less bright than on white boards. Light tones may become cloudy, while larger areas covered in color will appear darker. Underlaying white ink below text and images adds some contrast. When printed stand-alone, the Opaque White ink coverage is visually influenced by the board itself.
